Everything you need for
solar panel approval

From your roof measurements or existing plans to a polished set of solar panel drawings — we handle the CAD work so you don't have to. All drawings are produced to UK planning standards.

What's included in our solar panel planning service

Most domestic roof-mounted solar panel installations in the UK fall under permitted development and don't need full planning permission — but your installer or local authority will often still ask for drawings confirming panel positions, roof pitch, and projection distances. Other installations, such as those on listed buildings, in conservation areas, on flat roofs, or ground-mounted arrays, may require a full planning application.

We produce roof plans showing your proposed panel layout, and elevation drawings showing how far the panels project from the roof slope or wall — the key details planning officers and installers need to assess your installation.

We deliver your final drawings in PDF for viewing and printing, plus AutoCAD DWG if required by your installer or planning authority. Up to 3 rounds of revisions are included as standard on every project.

What You Send
  • ✏️ Roof measurements or a sketch with dimensions written on
  • 📸 Photos of the roof and your proposed panel layout
  • — or existing plans if you have them

Rough sketches are absolutely fine — they don't need to be to scale. We just need the roof dimensions and panel positions to work from.

What You Get
  • ✓ Roof plan with proposed panel layout
  • ✓ Elevations showing panel projection
  • ✓ Panel-to-roof-edge distances marked
  • ✓ Up to 3 rounds of revisions included
  • ✓ Final delivery in PDF + DWG formats

Solar panels and UK planning permission

Most roof-mounted solar panels on houses are covered by permitted development rights, provided panels don't project more than 200mm from the roof slope or wall, and aren't higher than the roof ridge. Ground-mounted arrays are also often permitted development, subject to size and height limits.

Full planning permission is typically required for installations on listed buildings, in conservation areas where panels would face a highway, within the curtilage of a listed building, or where the installation exceeds permitted development size and height limits. Rules can vary between local authorities, so we always recommend checking with your council or installer before work begins.

We produce planning and permitted-development drawings only — we do not provide structural calculations, roof load assessments, or electrical design, which must be carried out by a qualified engineer or MCS-certified installer.

Types of solar drawings we produce

Roof-Mounted Panel Plans

Roof plans showing the proposed panel layout, orientation and spacing — for pitched or flat roof installations.

Ground-Mounted Array Plans

Site plans showing array position, boundary distances and height for ground-mounted solar installations.

Elevation Drawings

Elevations showing how far panels project from the roof slope or wall, essential for permitted development and planning checks.

Listed Building & Conservation Area Drawings

Detailed drawings for full planning applications where solar panels fall outside permitted development rights.

Solar panel questions answered

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Most roof-mounted domestic solar panels are covered by permitted development rights and don't need full planning permission, provided they don't project more than 200mm from the roof slope and aren't higher than the ridge. However, listed buildings, conservation areas, and some flat-roof or ground-mounted installations may require full planning permission. We recommend checking with your local planning authority before work begins.

What drawings do I need for a solar panel installation?

Even under permitted development, most installers and local authorities want to see a roof plan showing the proposed panel layout and an elevation drawing showing how far the panels project. If a full planning application is needed, more detailed drawings covering the wider property may be required.

Can I install solar panels on a listed building?

Yes, but you'll almost always need full planning permission and listed building consent, since permitted development rights don't apply. We can produce the detailed roof plans and elevations needed to support that application.

What do I need to send you to get started?

Roof measurements or a sketch with dimensions written on, plus photos of the roof and your proposed panel layout if you have one. Rough sketches are absolutely fine — they don't need to be to scale. We just need the measurements to work from.

How long do solar panel drawings take to produce?

Most solar panel roof plans and elevations are completed within 2–3 working days. Larger or more complex properties may take a little longer. We'll give you a clear, confirmed timeline with your quote.

What file formats do you deliver?

We deliver in PDF and AutoCAD DWG as standard — whichever your installer, architect, or planning authority requires. Just let us know when you enquire.

Do you handle structural checks for roof-mounted panels?

No — structural assessments of roof load capacity must be carried out by a qualified structural engineer or your MCS-certified installer. We produce planning and permitted-development drawings only.
