Everything you need for
air conditioning approval

From your measurements and photos to a polished set of air conditioning drawings — we handle the CAD work so you don't have to. All drawings are produced to UK planning standards.

What's included in our air conditioning drawing service

Many domestic air conditioning and heat pump installations can go ahead without a full planning application, but your council, landlord, freeholder or installer will often still ask for drawings confirming where the external unit will sit, how high it is, and how close it is to boundaries and neighbouring windows. Installations on listed buildings, in conservation areas, on flats or on commercial premises may need a full planning application.

We produce site plans showing the position of your outdoor unit and any wall- or roof-mounted equipment, and elevation drawings showing the unit's position, height and projection — the key details planning officers, landlords and installers need to assess your installation.

We deliver your final drawings in PDF for viewing and printing, plus AutoCAD DWG if required by your installer or planning authority. Up to 3 rounds of revisions are included as standard on every project.

What You Send
  • ✏️ A sketch with the property and boundary measurements
  • 📸 Photos of where the unit is to be installed
  • — plus the unit make and model, or its dimensions

Rough sketches are absolutely fine — they don't need to be to scale. We just need the measurements and proposed unit position to work from.

What You Get
  • ✓ Site plan showing proposed unit position
  • ✓ Elevations showing unit height and projection
  • ✓ Distances to boundaries and windows marked
  • ✓ Up to 3 rounds of revisions included
  • ✓ Final delivery in PDF + DWG formats

Air conditioning and UK planning permission

Whether an air conditioning installation needs planning permission depends on the type of unit, where it is fitted and the type of building. Heat pump systems have specific permitted development conditions covering size, position and distance from boundaries, and standard split-system units may fall under different considerations.

Planning permission is more likely to be needed for listed buildings, properties in conservation areas where equipment faces a highway, flats and maisonettes, and commercial premises. Noise is also assessed by many councils. Rules vary between local authorities, so we always recommend checking with your council or installer before work begins.

We produce planning and permitted-development drawings only — we do not provide noise assessments, electrical design, refrigerant or system design, which must be carried out by a qualified engineer or F-Gas certified installer.

Types of air conditioning drawings we produce

Site Plans

Plans showing the outdoor unit's position within the plot, with distances to boundaries and neighbouring properties.

Elevation Drawings

Elevations showing the unit's position, height and projection from the wall, essential for permitted development and planning checks.

Floor Plans

Internal plans showing indoor unit locations and pipe routes through to the outdoor unit where required.

Listed Building & Conservation Area Drawings

Detailed drawings for full planning applications where air conditioning falls outside permitted development rights.

Air conditioning questions answered

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Often not for a typical domestic installation, but it depends on the unit type, its position and your property. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and commercial premises are the most common cases where permission or consent is required. We recommend checking with your local planning authority before work begins.

What drawings do I need for an air conditioning installation?

Most councils, landlords and freeholders want to see a site plan showing where the outdoor unit will sit and an elevation showing its position and height. If a full planning application is needed, more detailed drawings of the wider property may also be required.

Can I install air conditioning on a listed building?

Usually only with listed building consent, and often planning permission too, since permitted development rights don't apply. We can produce the detailed plans and elevations needed to support that application.

I live in a flat — what do I need?

Flats generally don't benefit from the same permitted development rights as houses, and you will usually also need your freeholder's or management company's consent. Clear drawings showing the proposed unit position help with both.

What do I need to send you to get started?

A sketch with the relevant measurements, photos of where the unit is to go, and the unit's make, model or dimensions if you have them. Rough sketches are absolutely fine — they don't need to be to scale.

How long do air conditioning drawings take to produce?

Most air conditioning site plans and elevations are completed within 2–3 working days. We'll give you a clear, confirmed timeline with your quote.

Do you carry out noise assessments or system design?

No — noise assessments and system design must be carried out by a suitably qualified specialist or your installer. We produce planning and permitted-development drawings only.
